Awake! PDFs from 1957-1969

The Watchtower Library CD only has Awake! issues from 1970 onwards. There are many interesting articles printed in Awake! before 1970 and this post will give information on how to download PDFs of Awake! magazine from 1957 to 1969. These are converted from TIFF issues which were shared by another member of this board and are now searchable and bookmarked by issue. The scan quality is sufficient to read but is not at highest quality. Still, this helps to keep the size of the files much smaller.

These files contain the complete magazine articles for these years except for 1967 which only has a few months available. Otherwise, they are complete.

Thanks for making these searchable pdf´s they are very helpful. Hopefully someone can scan the rest of the 1967 awake in the future so that it will be complete.

As far as 75 stuff...

I found some quotes I wasn't that familiar with in the 1966 and 1967 PDFs. The 1966 quote was from an article about a Gilead graduation and the speaker brought up 1975 and said something like, "Don't we want to be found being busy in missionary work in 1975?"

The 1967 quote has someone referring to the then new "Life Everlasting" book and expressing some excitement about 1975.

Of course, the 1966 and 1968 Awake! PDFs also have other mention of 1975.

Some recollections from various years of Awake!

1969 -- if you're a young person, you'll never grow old in this system

1968 -- description of persecution of JWs in Malawi. Also, the infamous "Is It Later Than You Think?" The dangers of the Ouija board

1967 -- appreciative letter from reader of Life Everlasting book. Mentions 1975

1966 -- How Much Longer Will It Be? article in Oct 8 issue. Apparently the God's rest day runs parallel to man's creation and 6,000 years of God's rest day will run out in 1975.

1962 -- The United Nations and the Kingdom of God

and a lot more, to be sure.

A few more gems from the '68 Awake:

"For example, there is the cat family with its many different species, including tigers, panthers, leopards, and so forth. However, it seems likely that many species of cats could have descended from an original pair of cats that emerged from the ark. It is similar with the dog family, which includes such a vast array of domesticated dogs, as well as the related wolves, jackals, coyotes, and so forth. They, too, could have descended from an original pair."

"True, there have been those in times past who predicted an "end to the world," even announcing a specific date... Yet, nothing happened. The "end" did not come. They were guilty of false prophesying."

Going through these brought back many memories. I started reading Awake! in 1965 and distributing it in 1967. I think Awake! (like Consolation and Golden Age) tells us more about the JWs on a cultural level than the Watchtower magazine does, though it's an odd culture!
