I just recently grew a goatee mainly to balance off my face due to the thin hair on my head.

the style is similar to one of these..

This scriptural idea is used to discourage JW's from growing facial hair.. except a mustache  ...

1 Peter 3:3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel

4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price

What are your thoughts serious or humorous ???

My question is why is hair above the lip is Godly... but below the lip "evil "or" causing stumbling"

Well arranged and neat to me would seem to be a balanced approach

I don't think they should look like this however

What would a hair at the corner of your mouth be evil or godly ???  .....

See, I think mustaches are evil. Beards aren't. Unless you are Spock.

Dependzz.  Does jay hoover wear a goatee?  Seems to me, that the pics i saw of him, he had a white beard.  Therefore, a bleached beard would be godly, eh?

I'm sorry but whoever used 1Pet 3:3 to discourage facial hair is an IDIOT. 1 Pet 3:1-4 was directed at WOMEN:

1Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 3Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. 4Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.

Using that scripture to discourage goatees makes no sense unless it's a woman that's wanting to grow one.  Even then, that would be stretching it a tad.

I remember getting counseled more than a couple of times over mustache and sideburns.  The rules set out for Bethel were applied to pioneers and MSs, though I tried hard to buck the tide.

Once I was on my way out, I grew a beard and challenged an elder on a sheparding call to prove from the Bible why beards were wrong for Christians.  Of course he couldn't but he did say something that really opened my eyes.  He talked about major corporations that had  strict grooming laws (Ross Perot's company was one he mentioned) and how employees represented the company and were not allowed to appear just any ole way.  Similarly, "we" represented....wait for it...no...not Jehovah...but the ORGANIZATION and we should all be similar in our grooming to make sure the message was in the forefront, not our image.

That's when I realized that we weren't Christians with a message but unpaid employees representing a publishing company.

The grooming laws have nothing to do with godliness.  It has everything to do with upholding a squeeky clean reputation for a Bible publishing company.

I don't even know how to respond to that. Who actually looks at a man's goatee and sees a v____ ?    It's frightening that he's in a position of authority...

I wish I could grow facial hair, whenever I try it looks like I have glued an uncleaned, very old, ginger, grey and brown patterned carpet to face.

Very easy. Become an utter brain damaged moron and you too can sputter out nonsense like that. You can even qualify to conduct studies while in that condition.

I encouraged Caliber to grow his goatee to help him look more sharp as a new grampa. I figured it would make Hope4others eyes sparkle more. I am guilty as charged.

    phallus /phal·lus/ (fal´us) pl. phal´li

    2. a representation of the penis.

Phallus is not generally understood to represent anything female.

By splitting hairs (no pun intended) it could be a female's object of desire.
