It feels soooo good having finished the last assignment for the Open University courses I've been doing - the 18th one this year Now I just have to revise for the exams (3 of them over 2 days) ... and if I get at least 40% then I pass, get an extra qualification and we get extra immigration points to get us on our way to Canada. Anything extra is a bonus ... distinctions would be nice but I need to get 85% in the exams for that.Although I resent the impact of the WTS on my life and not being able to go to university when I should, this actually isn't a bad way to do it - you don't run up massive debts like current students do and because you have more experience probably do better at a subject than if you are starting out. Of course the real benefit of a degree etc. is when you are starting out but still, doing it while you are working is a useful achievement to put on your CV even if experience is your biggest selling point.I still have to get the last 2 assignments marked (one should be next week but the other is a project for a short course and won't be for a month or so) but I've got the marks I need. Ironically, the worst marks I got were for the assignments I did when I was out of work ... I seemed to do much better when I had some time pressure. Anyway, I just wanted to say that it's never too late to pick up your life after the WTS and DO SOMETHING. What are you waiting for? Don't complain that the WTS denied you further education ... go out and make it happen! |

I've always wanted to teach. But I'm scared now of dropping my career for four years to go back to school. I have financial obligations now. I wish I could study and work fulltime at the same time.... But on the other hand I admire anyone who can go out there and achieve their goals! ![]() |

![]() Just do a bit at a time ... if you can use something like the OU then they can help with funding if you don't have the income. You don't have to take on too much - just do a starter course first of all and before you know it you will be half way there and have the incentive to see it all through. |

Yeah SimonAnother advantage of going back later is that generally you KNOW what you want to do so can tailor your course needs to what you want when you get out |

Congrats! You will ace the exams, I`m sure. If I recall correctly you did quite well the last time, hey? Thanks for sharing, Si. I needed to hear that. My plans for school this month got whacked due to an administrative error --- someone didn`t do the proper paperwork for my funding, and she assured me in April that it had all been taken care of ... so now, it will be at least till January, and maybe even next September, before I get started. It was quite a blow when I found out several weeks ago. At 47, that is quite daunting, but every time I hear of someone else who has returned to school, it helps me to realize that I can do it.tal |

Congrats, Simon!! That's a big accomplishment. You must be exhausted. So what should we call you now, Bachelor Simon? Master Simon? Doctor Simon?
Oh, and what is your degree in?
I finished my Master's at 35. You are right, it can be done. I still reserve my right to complain about the WTS though.

Congratulations Simon! I remember when I finished my last class and last exam, what an incredible feeling. Then graduation, where you just sit back and gloat all day over a job well done. Its kind of ironic with me, I almost have the WBTS to thank for my education, because my hatred for them and what they stood for kept me going when many I time I wanted to pack it in. Just to rub their face in it so to speak. |

I know it would be a lot cheaper for me to come to a snowfest in Canada than in England. What part of Canada are you headed to? Oh yeah, my daddy used to say, " May the bluebird of happiness fly up your nose." |

this actually isn't a bad way to do it - you don't run up massive debts like current students do and because you have more experience probably do better at a subject than if you are starting out. Isn't THAT the truth ! Great news.... |
