One of the police officers here is a transplanted New Yorker who was raised as a JW by his g'ma. He and I talk a lot about his JW experience, his g'ma, and his children (Boy age 18, girl age 11). His kids are both talented athletes (tennis) and the son won a tennis scholarship to university. He hopes the daughter will follow in her brother's footsteps. Mr. Officer mentioned that one Saturday, after a particularly strenuous workout, he gave his daughter a bottle of red Gatorade to drink. He said she resisted drinking it at first, but he put his foot down and made her do it. Well, come Sunday, he got an urgent message at work that he was to call home immediately. He said he called, fearing the worse, and his daughter informed him that "the red stuff you gave me yesterday is coming out of me." He didn't have a clue as to what she meant. He said he told his son to see if he could find out what was going on. His son reported that Baby Girl was locked in the bathroom and refused to come out. By then, Mr. Officer was really scared. He said he rushed home to find Baby Girl still locked in the bathroom, freaking out. After much coaxing and cajoling and still no results, he called his wife who was out of town on business. He said Baby Girl opened the door a crack so that the could pass the phone to her. After a while, she passed the phone out to him and wife informed him that there was no need to panic; Baby Girl had just begun "the customary thing with women." If you could have heard him tell it, you would have died laughing! It was so funny because he speaks with this heavy New York accent. I just thought of it when he came into the office. Can you tell it's a sloooooow day? Sylvia

lol. seems like a couple of parents are falling WAY behind in the old prepare-your-children-to-be-functioning-adults department. HTH does a girl get to be eleven years old w/o having heard about periods?

Six, she was prepared - in theory. LOL. Minimus, from The Message Bible: Genesis 31:35 Rachel said to her father, "Don't think I'm being disrespectful, my master, that I can't stand before you, but I'm having my period." Sylvia |

He said that his wife had prepared her well, but Baby Girl had no idea it would be quite like that. She's a babyish, Daddy's girl, anyway. Children are funny. Sylvia

Hm, I'm beginning to wonder what my daughter's reaction will be. She has a few body issues.

Nature happens. It could have been worse. There was a young lady at my KH that started her first during a meeting. The white dress she was wearing made it a dead give away to everyone. |

DJK, that is sooooo not good. Being raised in the backwoods, I've got tons of horror and humorous stories to tell about coming of age, but I'll spare you. Sylvia |

My daughter just started hers last week for the first time. She was excited and couldn't wait to call her girlfriends. I bought her a rose. When she asked why. I told her when you become a woman you should get roses. |

I've always been a private kind of person when it comes to personal matters . When I had my first period, my mom told her friends at the hall. I was mortified when they congratulated me .....ahhhhhhhhh. |

Wow, that just brought back memories... When my time first started my mother was out of town so dear dad (also a policeman) had to give me the talk and get me the right "equipment"... Poor man, in retrospect, it must have been absolutely mortifying for him!

Good thing the parents weren't like the mother in Sissy Spacek's movie Carrie.

Awwww....my 11yr old granddaughter started her's last week. Thankfully she was prepared and knew what was going on. We bought her chocolate and told her we were going to miss the little girl she used to be, but was looking forward to watching her grow in to a strong and beautiful woman. I also found out that one of her friends started and didn't tell her mother because she was afraid she would get in trouble. How sad is that?

I was on a road trip with my mom, aunts, and grandma. We stopped at a truck stop to use the ladies' room. They all made this big embarrassing commotion, and all I could think about were the truckers outside the restroom eating dinner. They must have been like, what in the world is going on with those women?! They had to find "protection" and the whole 9 yards. memories .....
