Well, they couldn't be referred to as belonging to THE CHRISTIAN CONGREGATION OF JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES, so plain old Jehovah's Witnesses will have to do.

Back in the halcyon days of Judge "Religion is a snare and a racket" Rutherford, the JW religion was not presented as a religion in Society publications. It simply was the truth. The word "religion" was synonymous with "falsehood." So when the name "Jehovah's witnesses" first came out, it was not presented as the name of a denomination. It referred to those who faithfully worshipped and followed God and followed the light of truth in their day. It made the Rutherfordites synonymous with other witnesses of Jehovah in history. So thus Abel, Noah, Job, Moses, David, Paul, Arius, Luther, etc. were all viewed as Jehovah's witnesses throughout history. To emphasize that this was not the name of a "religion," the "w" was not capitalized and "Christian" was often inserted: "Jehovah's Christian witnesses." But today I think the Society more consciously uses the name the way everybody else does, as a name of their own sect, while retaining the older usage for ideological reasons.Leolaia
