PZ Myers mocks Latest Awake

Biologist and science blogger PZ Myers has commented on the upcoming Awake magazine in today's blog at Pharyngula.

Pharyngula is essential daily reading.

Hypocrisy is the language of the Watchtower Society. You can't expect them to speak anything else.

I read the article about the Polish scientist who grew up atheist. It seems he was later enlightened by some Jehovahs Witnesses. Now he believes in "God". He never acknowledged Jehovah as this god, nor does he claim in the article to be a JW. Isn't it a bit odd to find WT accepting of those who simply believe in "a god"?

I have never seen atheists groups actually organize to picket church groups. Atheists may speak up in a way to educate others but I have not seen them attack with physical force people who are trying to go inside of churches. This is what is implied through the artwork in the magazine.

Did you notice that the "preacher" in his ecclestical robes, silhouetted in white, has all the appearance of an angel, with the robe sleeves subliminally depicting wings? Does this give some indication that WT is accepting the ecclestical dress codes of worldly religions now as being legitimate?

Do I see a subtle formation of interfaith beginning in the WT ranks? Will they bond with the worldly religions and unite to oppose the atheists of the world? Are they trying to create a division here by implying violent opposition and a need to bond with christians of all faith in order to have strength to oppose the new boggie-man?

The last time I had a JW around, I spoke to the 2 small kids with her. 'Don't listen to your mother's religious nonsense, she doesn't know what she's talking about", I said. She fled.

thats funny my friend were discussing on how athesists don't push other people to become atheists. but christians do. She said we should work the neighborhood. But I think that may not be a good idea in this here bible belt.

Well, it seems that atheists or perhaps even non-Theists are a common threat to religions and  a common enemy they can all bash with impunity.

Damn and I thought I was thru with proselytizing!

I found it exceptionally deceptive that they quoted michael dentons book from the 80's (that has never been revised) saying the theroy of evolution is a myth. In the tradition of 'new-light', denton wrote a book over ten years later admiting he did believe in the 'law of evolution'... so much for the watchtower using updated source material.

Further, there is kind of a deceptive way they talk about Anthony Flew - saying he ditched the idea of athiesm, they hint that he converted to religion but anyone who knows anything knows he and Paul Davies (Who has been rejected by the scientific community for his unscientific science.) are deists, not christians. This artical should had been named  "Fringe physicist and biologists who wrote books in the 80's reject christianity and observable science for a more vauge concept"

It continues to argue that houses just don't pop into existance. I also enjoyed the little box about how god feels about human sacrifice. Jehovah was obviously pissed because all of those children were being burned up for another god, not him. After all, Jehovah doesn't mind human sacrifice, as long as it's to him. See the lovely story : Jephthah burns his daughter to make god happy.  Judges 11:29-40. It's a great bed-time story.

I'm sure glad we get our morals from the bible.

No Apologies

One of the comments caught my attention, it never occurred to me that house-to-house calling was so bad-mannered. 

I pointed out that they were playing the common missionary of trick coming to my house without invitation and presuming on my politeness in a social Catch-22. That is, by not getting advanced permission they set it up that I had either endure their bullshit or risk "being rude" to them in order to get them, the unwelcome guest, to leave.

So, instead of "being polite" or making some BS excuse, I turned the tables on them and told them that they were being "quite rude" by presuming up on me without asking my permission to come over and clearly without regard to my personal space and time. Especially at that hour of the day which is dinner/family time.

Then I shut the door in their faces. Just left them there.
