Pardon my asking. I have a dance friend that invited me to their event at their church. It is a half hour dance show, then a half hour dance lesson, then general dancing till midnight. This sounded okay. . . but . . . Then... My friend requested that I do not wear a short skirt,
I'm afraid that I do not know much about Mormons. What do you think? ESTEE |

Cult has a broad array of meanings, from harmless to dangerous depending on the context, or era, in which it is being used. A more descriptive term is 'high control group'. My friend requested that I do not wear a short skirt, That sounds like control to me. What do you think?

I think so.. Im reading a book right now about the FLDS which are more extreme in many ways but they are a branch off Mormonism. Definetely a dangerous cult. Mormons restrict many areas of life just as Witnesses do. No coffee or warm beverages, no alcohol, dress and grooming etc. ~fmy |

Refreshments at the dance will be lousy. Mormons are not allowed to drink coffee, or coke, or tea. You know it's a CULT because they will serve Kool-aide!

Well like us they have Ex and Recovery forums........ http://www.exmormonforums.com/ They have Freeminds-like sites too and a ex-meetup site It shares so many similarities to the Ex-JW community.......so I would attribute the waddles, quacks and looks like a duck theory.... |

Yes, it does fit the definition. Not quite as dangerous as the JW cult, which in turn is certainly not as dangerous as many of the other more extreme cults, but nevertheless a cult just the same. The Oracle |

ESTEE- Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Scientologists, new age cults. I put them pretty much in the same " cult " category. As Steve Hassan mentioned in his books on cults- Any religion which takes the locus of control or power out of the individuals hands and makes their decisions for them is a mind control cult. Religions which allow YOU to control what you decide are less likely to be " cultish ". Peace out, Mr. Flipper |

Buy yourself a copy of "Under the banner of heaven" at a used bookstore. Your questions shall be answered in that book. |

The user ExmormonFoundation on Youtube has a lot of excellent videos on Mormons. Here is the url for the channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ExmormonFoundation Also there is a great video (cut into I think around 12 videos) with Steven Hassan from the same user. This is the first video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az4tE2eLoKc |

Hi everyone, Thanks for your responses. I knew from talking to my friend that Mormonism has similarities to dubdumb. When I read some of the internet links, I see that clearly. Old Flame said - Take this coming from a ex Mormon. YES THEY ARE A CULT ! Just like the JW's Glad to hear you escaped from the cult. Glad when anyone escapes! Steven Hassan's book, Releasing the Bonds is one that I own --- and I have read parts of it. I found that Hassan could not address the issue with my kids who shun me. That door is closed with absolutely no communication. My kids are scared witless of me and it's what I taught them about ones who leave the borg. FLIPPER said - Any religion which takes the locus of control or power out of the individuals hands and makes their decisions for them is a mind control cult. What you said is dead on. Here is a key that people in cults do not comprehend, unfortunately. Really, it is as simple as that. When one gives over their free will and decision-making to another, that is "mind control." JerkhovahsWitless said - Youtube has a lot of excellent videos on Mormons. Yes, and I have seen several of Hassan's videos. Thanks. Thanks again for all of this wonderful input---I really appreciate it! ... Now I'm wondering what strategic thought-provoking statement I might say to my friend...any suggestions...? ESTEE
