Happy birthday, son Joel.

Happy belated birthday to my son Joel.  Yes, it was on the 30^th that you were born and I was just thinking of what went through our minds when that momentous event happened. I was happy to be at the hospital with your mother the very next day so I wouldn't have to answer the door where trick-or-treaters would flock.

We both wondered whether you'd enter school because the end seemed so near.  We seriously didn't think you'd make it into your teenage years before Armageddon would arrive.

Well, you made both of those milestones with years to spare - many years.

You chose to stick with the teachings that I led you to believe while I chose to abandon them for reasons that I can only wish you would understand.  Perhaps one day you will understand.

I make my happy birthday wish from some location that is remotely located from where you have a life which I know little about. If you were next door you sadly would shun my wishes.

Perhaps when you turn 50 things will have changed and you will understand.

Perhaps next year, Joel.  That's only a year from now when you can then join AARP.
